The Software Institute (SI) is part of the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), situated in the beautiful city of Lugano, Switzerland.

The SI excels in discovering, designing, and developing innovative approaches to facilitate the creation of modern software systems. Its research is grounded in rigorous theoretical models and driven by practical, real-world challenges that shape contemporary society, where robust and well-engineered software systems are indispensable.

Founded in 2017 by Michele Lanza, the SI is a recognized center of excellence dedicated to advancing education, research, and development of software. Under the leadership of Paolo Tonella, the SI boasts a distinguished team of software researchers, including Michele Lanza (Software Engineering & Software Visualization), Gabriele Bavota (Empirical Software Engineering), Matthias Hauswirth (Computing Education & Software Performance), Cesare Pautasso (Software Architecture & Web Engineering), and Carlo Alberto Furia (Formal Methods & Verification).

The SI also offers a pioneering Master program in Software & Data Engineering.
